THE POSITION
The Lowell School District is seeking an outstanding individual,to maintain the service schedule of district vehicles and perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equiptment where applicable. This position also includes the duties of bus driver when needed.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Lowell School District mechanic maintains and repairs all district vehicles, as well as grounds/custodial equipment. The Mechanic keeps up with all annual service schedules as well as preventative maintenance to ensure vehicle/equipment safety and compliance with state safety regulations. By doing this, the employee prevents interruptions of district transportation routes and vehicle trips. In addition, the mechanic/bus driver works closely with district transportation, maintenance and administrative staff to perform duties as assigned. The Mechanic will fill in for bus drivers out on leave, shortages during vacation periods, for regular routes, or during special events.
DUTIES:
- Ability to obtain an ODE Annual Bus Inspection Certificate
- Ability to obtain CDL, First Aid, CPR and ICC Physical cards
- Must have a clean driving record
- Work well with others
- Ability to drive full sized large capacity buses
- Ability to learn immediate geographic area
- Must be able to fulfill all duties of regular bus driver
- Ability to work with students in a supervisory, supportive and positive capacity
- Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, policies and procedures
- Ability and commitment to practice cultural competency and demonstrate respect for diversity
- Ability to work efficiently with special needs children
- Must be able to pass a criminal history background check and submit fingerprints
- Must possess two years of technical, or trade school, or equivalent experience in automotive, diesel, truck or military equipment maintenance.
- Has a general knowledge of computers
- Ability to perform annual inspections and maintenance on district vehicles
- Ability to track and log annual maintenance and warranties on district vehicles
- Ability to perform oil changes on district vehicles
- Experience with sourcing parts, materials and supplies
- Must schedule bus annuals with contractors
- Assist in general maintenance duties throughout the district
- Must communicate with the Transportation Coordinator, & Transportation Office
- Ability to perform District Vehicle maintenance as needed
- Assist with information for tax and state reports
- Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics and preventative maintenance on district vehicles, grounds/custodial equipment (ie: weed eaters, mowers, gators, groomer, vacuum cleaners and floor scrubbers)
- Fuel buses and vans as needed
- Assist with School bus/van lot organization and management
- Work on diesel and gasoline engines, air and standard brakes, transmission, electrical and general maintenance on district fleet vehicles
- General computer and technology work for communication and documentation purposes
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED (General Education Diploma).
- Possession of a valid State of Oregon Driver’s License.
- Five (5) years of successful driving experience.
ABILITY TO OBTAIN/MAINTAIN:
- ASE Certification in School Bus, Heavy/Medium Truck or equivalent experience.
- Ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR card
- Ability to obtain and maintain an Oregon Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with proper endorsements and possession of an Oregon Department of Education (ODE) School Bus Drivers certificate and School Bus Inspector’s Certificate.
- Ability to successfully complete a physical examination, required DMV testing, required ODE classes, drug screening and physical strength testing.
WORK REQUIREMENTS:
This work is done in a school or district building environment, and may include solvent or cleaning smells, mechanical fluids and fuels. The mechanic will be on their feet all day, with bending, lifting, standing, twisting, walking, and kneeling. The mechanic must be able to lift up to 100 lb loads on occasion, and 50 lb loads repeatedly throughout the day. Safety equipment is available and will be used.
