$17.38-23.84 per hour (sign on bonus for new hires with a valid bus driving CDL at time of hire)

THE POSITION
The Lowell School District is seeking an outstanding individual, licensed, or have the ability to obtain a license, to drive buses and vans, to transport students to and from school, activities, athletics and other events.
POSITION SUMMARY
The employee will work collaboratively with school personnel in providing a safe environment to transport the students and athletes of Lowell School District. The candidate chosen for this job will have a desire to work with fellow staff as a team, be flexible and willing to follow all safety and security measures mandated by the district and ODE. As a bus driver and van driver responsibilities extend to additional duties including bus cleaning, fueling, pre-trip, records and duties as assigned. While performing bus duties, the rate of pay will be at the bus driver rate, and while performing van duties, the rate of pay will be at the van driver rate.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establish and maintain effective working rapport with students, parents, and staff.
- Drive regular route school busses as prescribed by assigned route and time schedule, and specified bus stops.
- Modify route temporarily in response to traffic or weather conditions.
- Initiate and administer discipline and reward systems to control student passenger behavior. Assign seating and train students in safe riding practices, street crossing, and emergency evacuation procedures.
- Perform pre-trip inspection of bus brakes, tires, emergency exits, lights, instruments, emergency equipment, and general operability; maintain interior cleanliness of bus.
- Complete required reports of odometer readings, bus malfunctions, student conduct and trips.
- Attend and participate in required classroom training programs, departmental meetings and planning sessions.
- Drive buses for field trips, athletic events, and other out-of-town special excursions as assigned.
- Communicate problems to Transportation Supervisor as necessary. Operate two-way radio or cell phone.
- May be required to drive Special Education routes as scheduling and/or relief driving requirements dictate.
- Drive van routes with students both in general education and Special Education.
- Must be able to maintain all driving credentials, such as license, CDL, and van certification.
- Perform related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Successful completion of advanced classroom and in-vehicle training and driving tests.
- Thorough knowledge of the operation and capabilities of District buses and bus equipment.
- Ability to drive safely under pressure of time constraints, student misbehavior, hazardous road conditions, and traffic demands.
- Punctuality and ability to pace activity to meet time schedules.
- Knowledge of student behavioral management techniques and ability to control large groups of students.
- Ability to represent the District's objectives of courtesy and responsibility to the public.
- Ability to remain available for evening or weekend meetings or driving assignments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a valid State of Oregon Driver's license
- Successful completion of core classes, training in first aid, a physical examination, and faultless driving record.
- Preference for applicants with a valid CDL, but the ability to obtain a CDL within 3 months of hire is required.
- Ability to pass van certification.
